The city of Mount Vernon and Kenyon College hosted The Washington Forum to discuss "Smart Growth: Protecting and Securing Ohio's Resources." The city of Mount Vernon and Kenyon College's Center for the Study of American Democracy continued their civic engagement series, The Washington Forum, with an installment focused on "Smart Growth: Protecting and Securing Ohio's Resources." The forum aimed to gather community leaders, experts, and residents to discuss how Ohio can support ongoing residential and industrial growth while responsibly managing essential resources such as electricity and water. Data centers were specifically mentioned as an emerging demand requiring adequate electric capacity.

Speakers included Dr. Steven McElwee, Vice President and Chief Security Officer of PJM Interconnection, who discussed regional power grid operations and ensuring electric capacity for growth, including data centers. Daniel Gernant, Principal Engineer with Arcadis, provided insights into Ohio's water resources, highlighting their advantage for economic development. Sam Filkins from the Knox Area Development Foundation also spoke on local economic development trends and balancing growth with resource stewardship.

Mount Vernon Mayor Matt Starr emphasized the importance of thoughtful planning and resource management as communities grow, stating that the discussion would help residents understand opportunities and challenges while highlighting steps to protect resources. The free event, part of the America 250 commemoration, took place at The Gathering Place in Mount Vernon.
