Residents of Newport Township, Pennsylvania, gathered at West Side Park in Nanticoke to organize against a developer's proposal for 15 data centers and three gas generation facilities within their township. The meeting, which saw a packed field house, was initiated by Brenda Grabowski after she received no clear answers at a previous commissioners' meeting. Community members expressed concerns about the project's potential impact.
Township Manager Joe Hillian had previously issued a statement indicating the developer plans to build seven data centers in a mixed-use zone and eight in an industrial zone, which are permitted under the township's current zoning ordinance drafted earlier this year. Fern Leard, a candidate for the state House 120th District, attended to show support, emphasizing the power of community action. Derek Sutcliffe, who has experience fighting data center development in Lackawanna County, encouraged residents to consider the power infrastructure required and remain resolute in their opposition. The Newport Township commissioners are scheduled to meet again on October 5th.
