Metro Council passes first data center regulations
Nashville's Metro Council unanimously approved the city's first zoning rules for data centers after months of community pushback. These new regulations include a ban on the largest facilities, public notice requirements, and new standards for power use, water reporting, and noise. An existing DC BLOX data center project near the Nashville Zoo will not be affected as its permits were filed before the new rules passed.
Nashville's Metro Council has taken a significant step toward regulating data centers, unanimously approving the city's first zoning rules for future projects. This decision comes after months of community pushback regarding data center development within the city.
The new regulations, now officially on the books, establish standards for where and how data centers can be built in Nashville. Key provisions include a ban on the construction of the largest facilities, a requirement for public notice to be provided to nearby property owners, and new standards concerning power usage, water reporting, and noise levels. Council members emphasized the importance of enacting these rules, even if it meant deferring some ideas for later consideration.
However, these newly passed rules will not apply to the proposed DC BLOX data center project situated near the Nashville Zoo. The company had filed its permits prior to the regulations being approved, effectively exempting it. Concurrently, the Metro Council has also advanced the mayor's eminent domain plan for the DC BLOX property, which is slated for a final vote on August 4th.
