The Archbald Borough Council held a contentious public hearing regarding a conditional use application for Essential Energy LLC's proposed natural gas power plant on Eynon Jermyn Road. Engineer W. Casey Deller of KCI Technologies attempted to reassure council members and the community about the plant's safety but faced heavy criticism for a persistent lack of specifics regarding generation capacity, emissions, equipment, natural gas sourcing, and water consumption. Deller maintained that such details would be finalized during the permitting process, subsequent to the council's conditional use approval.
Approximately 70 community members attended, raising concerns about public health, environmental impacts, and the plant's proximity to residential areas, parks, and schools. Councilwoman Lisa Osborne expressed frustration over making a decision without comprehensive information. The power plant is located on the same parcel as the proposed Project Boson data center, with both projects affiliated with Kriger Construction Inc. and PDC Realty LLC.
Residents, including Karen Timmons, a cancer survivor living near the site, voiced fears about emissions. Attorney Justin Richards, representing opposing residents, highlighted Archbald's zoning ordinance requirements for credible evidence and ensuring no negative impact on the neighborhood's character. The hearing was marked by tension, including criticisms regarding the late submission of a safety report. Cross-examination and testimony are slated to continue on August 18.
