'Our voices were heard': Neighbors react to Mahomet ending discussions with proposed data center
The Village of Mahomet ended discussions with Clean Cloud Energy about a proposed data center after community members raised concerns about the project. Village President Jason Tompkins cited public opposition and the developer's communication and transparency as major factors in the decision.
Mahomet officials have ended discussions with Clean Cloud Energy over a possible data center in the unincorporated area near the village. Village President Jason Tompkins said extensive community feedback, concerns about the project and difficulties obtaining complete information from the developer made it increasingly difficult to find a path forward.
Residents who opposed the proposal said they were concerned about potential effects on the aquifer, environment, farming and the community's future. Organizer John Bevan said building consensus was difficult while key information remained unavailable, while Tompkins acknowledged the project could have brought significant financial benefits but said the decision required more than considering its economic impact. The village said data centers are not currently under consideration, although commercial development remains a priority.
