Thousands of Georgia voters push for first-of-its-kind election on data centers
More than 14,000 Coweta County residents submitted a petition seeking a special election to overturn county approval of Project Sail, a proposed nine-building data center campus. The petition also seeks to prohibit future data centers through the county’s zoning code, while the Coweta County Probate Court reviews the signatures for certification.
More than 14,000 Coweta County residents have petitioned for a special election that could overturn county commissioners’ 3-2 approval of Project Sail, a proposed nine-building data center campus. The petition, organized with help from Citizens for Rural Coweta, also seeks to ban future data centers through the county’s zoning code.
The petition was submitted to Coweta County Probate Court, whose judge has 60 days to certify the signatures. If certified, the county would have 90 days to hold an election. Residents cited the project’s size and concerns about multiple data centers planned near homes, while county commissioners and the developers did not respond to WSB-TV’s requests for comment.
