Residents in Trinity, Alabama, are raising concerns as city leaders consider rezoning property to make way for AI data centers. Homeowners, led by Casteel, told News 19 that they were caught off guard by the City Council's decision to vote on the rezoning of land not far from their backyards.
The community opposes the project, citing potential strains on their area, including increased power demand, water consumption, noise, and pollution. Casteel emphasized worries about the impact on older people and children in the vicinity who could be exposed to these dangers. In response, Casteel has initiated a petition against the rezoning, gathering over 50 signatures, with the goal of compelling the City Council to implement a moratorium to allow more time to study the issue and find a consensus agreeable to both parties.
While the first public meeting on the rezoning request was held in June, and the property owner later amended his application, the Mayor confirmed that the rezoning vote can still take place. The battle over data centers is intensifying in North Alabama and specifically in Trinity, Morgan County.
