A protest against data center development took place in Wyoming, Michigan, outside the former Claimants Furniture Building, where "The Right Place" organization was hosting its annual Developer Day. The protesters targeted "The Right Place" for actively promoting AI data center projects across West Michigan, a region where concerns are rising about the rapid expansion of these facilities.
The demonstration was organized by groups such as "Stop Solon Township Data Center Residents United For A Healthy Will Together Games." Their primary objective is to halt proposed data center projects in Solon and Gaines Townships, among other areas in West Michigan. Organizers stated that despite multiple attempts, their calls to engage "The Right Place's" CEO about their data center promotion efforts had not received a response, prompting this public presence to make developers aware of the significant community opposition.
During the protest, residents voiced concerns that these developments amount to "selling out" their communities by consuming vital resources such as water and electricity, and by utilizing grants to bring in "hyperscale data centers" that pose unprecedented impacts. The protest also followed a six-hour township meeting the previous night, which organizers cited as further evidence of widespread local resistance to these types of developments.
