The proposed institute, named the Institute for Geospatial and Environmental Research in Education, aims to address public concerns and provide data-driven answers regarding data center developments. Cisa highlighted the need for unbiased research, stating that the public trusts educational institutions to provide factual information. The institute would study various aspects, including the impact of projected $18 billion data center campuses planned for the region.
Key areas of research would encompass water and air quality, noise pollution, electricity and water consumption, and the overall effects on surrounding ecosystems. Cisa noted that LSUS possesses the necessary faculty, students, and expertise to launch such an initiative. However, the proposal is currently seeking essential funding and official approval from the university leadership.
