East Bay cities move to pause new AI data centers
Hayward approved a 45-day moratorium on new AI data centers while city staff study the impacts of four existing facilities and two proposed 99-megawatt projects. Richmond extended its moratorium for more than 22 months, while Pittsburg directed staff to draft a similar pause for consideration next week.
The Hayward City Council approved a 45-day moratorium on new AI data center development as officials evaluate noise, electrical grid demands and water-system impacts. Staff will study four operating facilities and assess two proposed 99-megawatt data centers near Arden Road and Corporate Avenue; the pause could ultimately be extended for two years.
Elsewhere in the East Bay, Richmond's City Council extended its existing moratorium for more than 22 months. Pittsburg's council directed staff to prepare a 45-day moratorium for a vote the following Monday, reflecting broader regional concern about the effects and community benefits of large AI computing facilities.
