DeKalb County leaders extend data center moratorium

DeKalb County Commissioners voted to extend a temporary moratorium on applications for new data centers through September 30th. This decision came after residents packed the county meeting to voice concerns about the potential negative impacts of these facilities.

Residents warned that data centers could lead to drainage issues, higher utility bills, and environmental problems, including affecting schools, farmland, and community water quality. One resident highlighted concerns about runoff and drainage post-construction, questioning how the community would be protected when only a few jobs remain after the initial building phase.

The extension provides the county with more time to study the effects of rapid data center growth and review existing rules and potential new regulations before approving further projects. While some commissioners pushed for a year-long delay, that motion failed. Supporters of data centers argue that they bring new jobs and generate tax revenue for the county.
