Newport Twp. postpones Wednesday meeting, moves it to Greater Nanticoke Area High School
Newport Township postponed its commissioners meeting and moved it to a local high school because a large crowd is expected to question officials about a proposed 15-data-center campus. Fit Energy is proposing the $35 billion development, but township officials say no final decision has been made and litigation is pending.
Newport Township moved its scheduled commissioners meeting from the municipal building to Greater Nanticoke Area High School to accommodate residents expected to comment on a proposed 15-data-center campus. The project, proposed by Jupiter, Florida-based Fit Energy, would be built near the Glen Lyon and Lee sections and also includes three natural gas power stations.
The township said its third-party zoning officer has issued permits for the data centers and power stations, but officials have not made a final decision on development. A zoning ordinance adopted in April allows data centers by right in much of the township while requiring developers to submit a Full Impact Assessment Study before final approval. Township officials also cited pending litigation as a reason they cannot comment on the potential projects.
