Wisconsin communities struggle with what to do about data center development proposals
The Wisconsin Rapids Planning Commission unanimously approved a 12-month moratorium on data center development, following a public hearing. This decision aims to allow the city to develop comprehensive regulations for the industry amidst community concerns. Separately, the Oneida County Planning and Development Committee also advanced a similar moratorium proposal.
Communities across Wisconsin are grappling with how to manage an influx of data center development proposals, leading some local governments to enact temporary bans or adopt new zoning regulations. In a significant move, the Wisconsin Rapids Planning Commission voted 6-0 on Monday night to approve a 12-month moratorium on new data centers within the city limits. This decision came after a major public hearing at the middle school auditorium, reflecting widespread community concern.
The moratorium is intended to provide city officials with time to develop appropriate rules and regulations for the rapidly expanding data center industry, which currently lacks a specific regulatory framework. Marissa Johnson, an organizer against unchecked data center development, emphasized the need for "responsible development" and for regulations to "catch up to this industry."
In parallel, the Oneida County Planning and Development Committee recently advanced its own moratorium proposal to the full county board for consideration. This mirrors efforts by other Wisconsin cities, such as Wausau, which has already adopted a specialized zoning ordinance to define and restrict suitable locations for future data center projects.
