OpenAI’s massive Georgia data center project faces legal challenges

OpenAI's planned $20 billion data center campus, the largest in Georgia at 4 million square feet, is encountering substantial resistance in Effingham County. The Southern Environmental Law Center, a prominent nonprofit, has filed a lawsuit to challenge the project. This legal action comes amid considerable public outcry, with residents frequently attending town halls and county meetings to voice their opposition.

Despite OpenAI's commitment of an $85 million community investment and promises of reduced property taxes, local sentiment remains largely negative. The opposition has garnered support from U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) and other state elected officials, who have joined local rallies in the rural county, located approximately 30 minutes from downtown Savannah.
