District 6 councilman encouraging public input on data center regulations
San Antonio officials are considering new regulations for data centers, including limiting them to industrially zoned areas and requiring City Council approval. District 6 Councilman Rick Galvan is urging residents to provide input before the Zoning Commission review and an expected City Council vote, after a proposed moratorium failed to gain enough support.
San Antonio’s Zoning Commission is scheduled to review proposed regulations for new data centers, with the City Council expected to vote on the measures the following week. The proposals would update the city’s land-use code, restrict new data centers to areas already zoned for industrial use and require City Council approval before construction.
District 6 Councilman Rick Galvan, whose district contains 19 of the city’s 28 data centers, said the measures are intended to address concerns about oversaturation, particularly around Rogers Road, where three facilities are located near one another. Galvan also encouraged residents across San Antonio to participate in the public-comment process and help shape the final policy. Several council members had previously supported a possible moratorium on accepting new data-center applications, but the proposal did not secure enough support to advance.
