The American Lung Association's annual "State of the Air" report has assigned the Indianapolis-Carmel-Muncie metro area an "F" grade for smog and soot pollution, analyzing emissions data from 2022 to 2024. The central Indiana region ranked 11th nationally for year-round particle pollution and 14th for short-term particle pollution, indicating unhealthy air quality for over 670,000 children in Indiana. Tiffany Nichols, the ALA's director of advocacy, emphasized the vulnerability of children's developing lungs to polluted air and highlighted the need for stronger environmental protections. The report calls on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reverse recent rollbacks of clean air regulations and urges Indiana state and local lawmakers to protect air quality. Nichols also specifically mentioned the rise of data centers as a new potential threat, advocating for these companies to work with local communities and utilize renewable, zero-ignition energy sources to mitigate their environmental impact. The ALA criticizes the current EPA's perceived "deregulation campaign" for retreating from public health protections.
