
Tech companies explore concept of space-based data centers amid terrestrial challenges
Tech giants like Google, Meta, and SpaceX are exploring the concept of launching data centers into orbit, citing significant terrestrial roadblocks. This shift is driven by challenges such as local opposition, lengthy power grid connection waits, and environmental concerns, as exemplified by the Tucson City Council's rejection of Amazon Web Services' "Project Blue" due to water usage.
Faced with significant terrestrial challenges, tech giants including Google, Meta, and SpaceX are actively exploring the concept of deploying data centers in Earth's orbit. These challenges include an "explosive populist backlash," up to a 12-year wait for power grid connections, and environmental concerns such as water usage in drought-stricken areas.
One notable example occurred in Tucson, Arizona, where City Councilmember Nikki Lee voiced opposition to "Project Blue," a 290-acre data center, over its water demands. The Tucson City Council subsequently rejected the project's attempt to connect to city utilities, leading Amazon Web Services, the intended beneficiary, to withdraw. Similarly, Blue Origin, another Jeff Bezos company, has filed plans for numerous orbital data centers, while Google's research suggests space-based data centers could become cost-competitive within a decade.
SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, has based its initial public offering on launching a fleet of orbital data centers, aiming to assemble an AI data center in orbit by 2028 and generate 100 gigawatts of solar energy annually. Despite the enormous costs, engineering hurdles, and potential environmental risks like space junk and light pollution, proponents argue that space offers "cheap space and power" without terrestrial constraints like water rights negotiations.
Conversely, David Reid, a member of Virginia’s House of Delegates representing Loudoun County—a major data center hub—dismisses orbital data centers as "fictional nonsense." He advocates for better local zoning decisions on Earth, viewing terrestrial data centers as vital "money-printing machines" for local infrastructure. Experts believe space-based data centers are technically feasible, but their economic viability for powering large-scale AI remains an open question.
