Hitachi Energy has announced a $10 million investment to establish a new Power Electronics Center of Competence in Cary, North Carolina. This 32,000-square-foot facility, slated to open this fall, is projected to create 150 jobs and will provide engineering, testing, and other services. Its primary objective is to help utilities and developers manage the escalating electricity demand across the United States. The surge in electricity consumption is attributed partly to the rapid expansion of AI data centers, industrial electrification, and the integration of new energy sources, all of which are placing unprecedented strain on the national grid. U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright visited the construction site for the announcement. This Cary facility is part of Hitachi Energy's broader $1 billion commitment to U.S. manufacturing, a plan unveiled last year that also includes expanding existing facilities and building a new large power transformer factory in South Boston, Virginia. According to a company statement, these investments are designed to strengthen domestic supply chains, enhance access to crucial grid technologies, and improve the company's capability to provide localized support to customers, emphasizing the growing importance of reliable, high-quality electricity for economic growth and energy security.
