Freeport meeting highlights data center impacts
Freeport residents discussed potential data center impacts on water supplies, electricity costs and the environment as development expands in Illinois. Monarch Energy is exploring a large data center in nearby Rockford, while Stephenson County officials consider regulations and advocates support the proposed POWER Act.
Residents gathered at the Freeport Public Library to discuss the potential effects of expanding data center development, including water consumption, pollution and higher electricity costs. Speakers said large facilities can use millions of gallons of water daily and urged developers to provide clean, dedicated power.
Monarch Energy is exploring a large data center project in Rockford, and Stephenson County officials are weighing how to regulate future developments. Environmental advocates are also urging Illinois lawmakers to pass the proposed POWER Act, which would establish water-use protections and prevent data center energy costs from being shifted to residents; the legislation has not yet passed and could be revisited during the fall veto session.
