Chatham County approves pause on large-scale data centers

Chatham County commissioners have unanimously approved a 155-day moratorium on large-scale data centers in the county's unincorporated areas. The decision, made on Friday, applies to data centers with an electrical capacity of at least 10 megawatts, including existing warehouses being converted into data facilities.

Chairman Pro-Tem Dean Kicklighter, District 7, initially proposed a one-year moratorium but accepted the county attorney's recommendation for a 155-day pause. Kicklighter emphasized the need to thoroughly study the impact of these facilities on resources like electricity and water, noting that the moratorium could be extended if necessary. County Chairman Chester Ellis also raised concerns about the future impact of smaller, micro-data centers not covered by the current pause.

While some commissioners, like Brian M. Hussey, highlighted the significant revenue potential data centers could bring, especially given the county's 9 million square feet of vacant warehouse space, Commissioner Aaron "Adot" Whitely questioned if large-scale developments align with Chatham County's current growth trajectory. Residents who spoke at the meeting expressed support for the study period, requesting safeguards to be implemented.

The moratorium is set to remain in effect until February 16, with commissioners reiterating that an extension is possible should more time be required for a comprehensive review.
