The Nashville Zoo has launched a petition to oppose a proposed 69,000-square-foot data center slated for construction directly next to the zoo's parking lot. The petition has quickly garnered significant support, with over 99,000 signatures within days of its launch.

Rick Schwarz, President of the Nashville Zoo, expressed surprise and frustration, stating the zoo was caught off guard when developers filed permits for the project. He highlighted concerns about potential impacts on sensitive animals, increased water and energy demands, and generator noise. Schwarz reported attempts to communicate with DC BLOX, the company behind the project, have been unsuccessful, noting the company has not responded to requests for meetings.

Simultaneously, the Metro Council passed the first reading of a bill aimed at restricting large data centers near sensitive locations such as homes, schools, churches, and zoos. Zoo leaders are worried the proposed data center could negatively alter the area around one of Nashville's major tourist attractions before new regulations are fully implemented. Schwarz clarified that the zoo is not against data centers in general but believes this specific location is inappropriate, emphasizing the lack of answers regarding the project's details.
