The Parsippany Township Council unanimously introduced an ordinance that would prohibit data centers with more than 10 megawatts of electrical capacity in every township zoning district. The proposal will undergo a public hearing and possible final action, amid concerns about electricity demand, water use, noise, lighting and generators.
Parsippany Township Council introduced an ordinance that would ban data centers exceeding 10 megawatts of electrical capacity in all township zoning districts. The measure was approved for introduction unanimously after weeks of discussion and public input about the potential effects of large-scale and hyperscale facilities.
The proposal is scheduled to return to the council for a public hearing and possible final action on Nov. 24. Council members said concerns about generator use, noise, lighting and water consumption could continue to be considered as the ordinance proceeds through the public process.
