Ithaca public presentation to address Cayuga Lake data center proposal
Residents and organizers in Ithaca, NY, are hosting a public presentation to discuss a proposed 300 MW AI data center by TeraWulf on Cayuga Lake in the Town of Lansing. The event will detail the project's potential environmental and quality of life impacts, and outline actions for community members to take against it.
ITHACA, N.Y. – Residents of the Cayuga Lake area and local organizers are preparing to host a public presentation addressing a significant data center proposal in the Town of Lansing. The event, scheduled for Thursday, June 25, at 7 p.m. at the First Unitarian Society, aims to inform the community about the potential impacts of the facility and mobilize action against its development.
The proposed project, a 300-megawatt artificial intelligence data center, is being put forward by TeraWulf, a company that has transitioned from bitcoin mining to AI data center operations. It is slated for the shores of Cayuga Lake, on the site of a former coal plant in Lansing.
Concerns surrounding the development are significant, with the organization Sustainable Finger Lakes asserting that the data center would lead to adverse environmental, quality of life, and economic consequences for both people and wildlife within the Cayuga Lake watershed. The upcoming presentation, titled “No Data Center on Cayuga Lake,” will delve into these issues, provide informational resources, and suggest steps for residents, elected officials, business owners, and community groups to take action.
