A new data center powered primarily by fuel cells is proposed for Chantilly, Fairfax County. T-5 Data Centers is seeking clarification from Fairfax County on whether its innovative fuel cell power model, which converts natural gas to electricity, is permitted under current zoning. This would be the first data center in Fairfax County to use fuel cells, with the facility drawing supplemental power from Dominion Energy and diesel generators for backup.

A new 312,000 square-foot data center is being proposed for Chantilly, Virginia, in Fairfax County. The facility, represented by attorney Allison Reynolds for T-5 Data Centers, would utilize a unique fuel cell power system, making it the first of its kind in Fairfax County to operate primarily on fuel cells. These cells convert natural gas into electricity without combustion, generating nearly zero criteria pollutants and reducing reliance on the traditional power grid.
The proposed data center, situated at the intersection of Stonecroft Boulevard and Lee Road, would generate approximately 60 megawatts of energy from its fuel cells. While the fuel cells would be the primary power source, the facility plans to draw additional power from Dominion Energy during high-load periods and use a backup diesel generator for emergency situations. Fairfax Real Estate Insider first reported on the development.
Allison Reynolds submitted a letter to Fairfax County earlier this month, seeking clarification on whether the fuel cell model is permitted under the site’s existing zoning status. The letter highlights the increasing efficiency of fuel cells, making them a viable option for large facilities, and differentiates them from traditional natural gas or diesel generators, as well as battery energy storage systems, due to their non-combustion energy generation process. The fuel cells would be housed in a screened, outdoor yard.
