Georgia Power nuclear reactors to get huge face-lift, paid partly by Google
Google has agreed to pay a premium for electricity from upgrades to Georgia Power's nuclear reactors, a deal aimed at providing emission-free power for Google's data centers and easing costs for other customers. The utility plans to upgrade four reactors at Plant Vogtle and Plant Hatch, adding approximately 100 megawatts to the grid.
Google and Georgia Power have announced a partnership where the tech giant will pay a premium for new electricity generated from planned upgrades to Georgia Power's nuclear reactors. The agreement, part of a new program submitted to state regulators, aims to provide Google's data centers with emission-free power while projected to deliver $900 million in benefits to other Georgia Power customers over the units' lifespan.
Georgia Power intends to upgrade two older reactors at Plant Vogtle, located near Augusta, and two at Plant Hatch, situated west of Savannah. These improvements are expected to contribute approximately 100 megawatts of clean electricity to the state's power grid, which is already undergoing significant expansion to accommodate the growing demand from data centers across Georgia.
