The Westfield City Council has unanimously voted to schedule a public hearing on June 18 for a proposed 12-month moratorium on data centers. This decision comes amidst significant public support and concerns regarding environmental impacts, public health, water usage, and potential electricity costs. The moratorium aims to allow time for research into these issues and the development of a permanent zoning ordinance.

The Westfield City Council is moving forward with a proposed year-long moratorium on data center development within the city. Councilor Kristen Mello, chair of the Natural Resources Subcommittee, presented a motion on May 21 to schedule a public hearing for the 12-month moratorium, which passed unanimously. The proposal aims to allow the city to study the environmental and public health consequences of data center installations and gather expert information to inform future zoning ordinances.

The draft moratorium specifies a one-year timeframe, extendable only if public health is deemed in danger, emphasizing the need for a scientific basis for any permanent zoning decisions regarding data center locations. Residents have consistently expressed strong support for the moratorium during public participation segments, citing concerns about noise, air and water pollution, health risks experienced in other states, and the potential financial burden on taxpayers for infrastructure upgrades.

Several residents, including Donna Liese, Ronald Roux, and Jessica Britton, spoke in favor of the pause, highlighting the need for research and community input. A petition with 26 names was also presented by Jonathan Guido, primarily focused on water usage concerns. The public hearing is scheduled for June 18, where the City Council will further gather feedback from voters and the Planning Board to inform their decision on the proposed moratorium.
