Pennsylvania should embrace data center development, PA Chamber executive argues

Jon Anzur, the senior vice president of public affairs for the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, has authored an opinion piece advocating for Pennsylvania to become a leader in data center development. Anzur contends that data centers are critical infrastructure for modern life, enabling technologies from smartphones to telemedicine, and that opposing their development is inconsistent with embracing a tech-driven economy.

He highlights a "No Technology Pledge" proposed by the PA Chamber, a tongue-in-cheek initiative aimed at fostering a more informed public discourse about the necessity of digital infrastructure. Anzur argues that while public backlash has led to calls for development halts, the industry can develop responsibly. He points to existing standards, such as transparent projects, addressing environmental impacts, community investment, and avoiding increased costs for ratepayers. He specifically counters concerns about energy and water usage, citing studies that suggest data centers can lower electricity rates and employ efficient closed-loop cooling systems comparable to or less than typical office buildings.

The PA Chamber's Energy & Innovation Institute has developed a model ordinance and educational toolkit to help communities establish safeguards and separate facts from misinformation. Anzur concludes that Pennsylvania must recognize the need to build this digital infrastructure to lead in the future economy, while insisting on strong standards and meaningful community engagement.
