Pequot Lakes City Council enacts one-year data center moratorium
The Pequot Lakes City Council has approved a one-year moratorium on data center development, effective until July 15, 2027. This decision was made to allow the city to research and evaluate the potential impacts of data centers, as there are currently no regulations in place and no specific requests for data center construction. The council cited the high resource usage of data centers as a primary concern.
The Pequot Lakes City Council recently enacted a one-year moratorium on data center development, a decision made during its regular meeting on Monday, July 6. The moratorium, which will remain in effect until July 15, 2027, was approved to allow city officials ample time to conduct thorough research and evaluation into the potential benefits and drawbacks associated with such facilities.
According to city officials, a significant driver for the moratorium is the substantial resource consumption typically associated with data centers. Currently, Pequot Lakes lacks any specific regulations governing data center construction or operation, and the city has not yet received any proposals to build a data center within its limits. The council had previously discussed the matter last month, and a review by the city attorney confirmed that a public hearing was not required for the proposed ordinance.
