During the previous public hearing for Ordinance 26-1, supervisors heard comments from the public advocating for the inclusion of cryptocurrency mining protections within the same regulatory framework. However, due to the ordinance already being drafted, the board decided against redrafting it and instead opted to consider a separate ordinance specifically for crypto mining activities.
Key concerns raised during public comments centered on the substantial energy demands of cryptocurrency mining operations. These facilities utilize high-powered computers for blockchain network transactions, such as Bitcoin, with miners competing for block rewards. The public hearing is set to begin at 6:15 p.m. at 503 Franklin Street in Wapello.
