A construction worker, 33-year-old Christopher Lot, died on Monday night following a vehicle crash at Meta's data center construction site in Lebanon's LEAP District, Indiana. Police were called to the scene at approximately 5:45 PM after Lot was struck by a vehicle. The driver reported that the sun obstructed her vision, and passengers in the company pickup also stated they did not see Lot in the road, suggesting an accidental nature to the incident.
Despite immediate life-saving measures, Lot, who was employed by Mortenson, the general contractor for the 1500-acre Meta data center project, succumbed to his injuries. Meta and Mortenson issued statements expressing their deepest sympathies to Lot's family, loved ones, and co-workers, and made counselors available. Construction work at the site was temporarily halted, with workers given Tuesday and Wednesday off for grieving.
The incident is currently under investigation by a crash team to determine the precise circumstances. Concurrently, discussions online have highlighted concerns regarding worker safety at the property. Although police do not believe speed was a factor in this particular crash, previous fatal accidents on the nearby State Road 32 have prompted efforts to reroute employees to ease traffic congestion. The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration (IOSHA) is also involved in the ongoing investigation.
