The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska led a discussion in Salix, Iowa, regarding Google's proposed data center project. This event was the last of three presentations held throughout the day, focusing on the potential impacts of hyperscale data centers.
During the presentation, an ecologist and hydrologist provided information on the environmental, infrastructure, and economic effects of such facilities, including the operation of A.I. data centers. Keely Bassette Purcell, a member of the Winnebago Tribal Council, emphasized the tribe's vested interest due to the project's proximity to Winnebago tribal lands, which are three miles from Salix and would be directly affected by any development.
The initiative stemmed from concerns raised by Salix residents regarding future data center development near tribal lands. Tribal leaders are scheduled to meet with the Brave Heart Society to determine their next steps and hope to form a coalition with other tribes along the Missouri River to address data center developments collectively.
