Blazek, a social psychology expert, initiated the poll after the Pine Island City Council declined her offer to conduct one, aiming to clarify community sentiment. She asserts the findings align with national polls showing public backlash against data center development.
The 482-acre technology park, led by real estate developer Ryan Company, is currently stalled by a temporary restraining order issued by a Goodhue County judge. This legal action demands a more thorough environmental review for the project, which had previously received city approval. While a Ryan Company spokesperson declined comment, critics of Blazek's survey, including former Pine Island Mayor Rod Steele, argue it is flawed due to its self-administered, opt-in nature and distribution methods that may have introduced voluntary response bias.
Steele, a data center supporter, further contends that core objections raised by opponents regarding water, electricity, and noise pollution have been addressed and debunked by Google's plans for a closed-loop water system, direct electricity provision, and adherence to city noise limits.
