Governor Greg Abbott is calling for sweeping reforms for AI data centers in Texas. Governor Greg Abbott has announced a shift in his stance on artificial intelligence data centers, advocating for sweeping reforms. In a letter dispatched to the leaders of the Public Utility Commission (PUC) and ERCOT, which manages Texas's power grid, Governor Abbott urged the implementation of new regulations designed to safeguard residents and small business owners.

His proposals include requiring AI data centers to fully fund their own electricity interests and to reduce residential electricity costs associated with data center operations. Furthermore, Governor Abbott stated his intention to introduce measures to reclaim tax incentives previously granted to data centers, once the legislature reconvenes in January.

State Representative Gina Hinojosa, a Democrat running for governor, has criticized Abbott's sudden change of heart, asserting that his current actions are a direct response to her statewide campaign for data center reforms. Hinojosa highlighted that Abbott previously promoted Texas as an epicenter for AI data centers, pointing out the apparent inconsistency in his position.
