Henderson leaders consider pause on new data center approvals
Henderson City leaders are considering a 180-day moratorium on new data center approvals to analyze their impacts on electricity, environment, and local residents. This move follows a similar action by the City of Reno, which extended its moratorium until August 2027 or until new rules are in place. The proposal will be referred to the July 21st City Council meeting.
Henderson City leaders are contemplating a temporary suspension of new conditional use permit applications for data center developments. The proposed moratorium, which would last 180 days or until new data center regulations are established, is set to be referred to the July 21st City Council meeting for potential action.
This consideration stems from concerns regarding the impact of data centers on electricity demand and costs, the environment, and nearby communities. If passed, Henderson would become the second city in Nevada to implement such a measure. The City of Reno previously extended its own moratorium, halting data center approvals through August 2027 or until new rules are implemented.
Olivia Tenajour, President of the local Sierra Club chapter, highlighted widespread concerns about data centers, including utility bill increases due to energy generation, water issues such as drying springs, and increased carbon emissions and air pollution. She emphasized the need to adequately regulate the industry and hold it accountable. The discussion around data center development is described as a "hot topic" in Southern Nevada, where a boom in such facilities is occurring.
