The Festus City Council has approved a hyperscale data center plan from developer CRG in a 6-2 vote during a special meeting held at Festus High School. The decision followed two hours of intense public comments where residents expressed significant opposition, pleading with the council to either reject or table the proposal. Many residents reported feeling that their concerns were ignored, despite being given the opportunity to speak.
Residents voiced fears that the data center would destroy their dream homes and negatively impact their quality of life. Following the council's approval, some residents indicated their intention to explore legal avenues to challenge the decision. Supporters of the deal, however, presented estimates suggesting the project could generate over $1 billion in revenue for the city over 25 years, creating jobs in logistics, transportation, maintenance, and technology.
City officials stated that by approving the plan, the city would gain control over certain aspects of the project, addressing some resident concerns. However, many residents remain unconvinced that these safeguards will be sufficient or effectively enforced to protect their community. Police were reportedly present as council members exited the meeting, highlighting the tense atmosphere.
