Data Center: Taxes, Water and Traffic
A Fayette County opinion letter argues that a proposed data center near Winchester could bring uncertain tax revenue while creating noise, water, groundwater, and traffic risks. The Fayette County Commissioners Court has already passed a resolution opposing data centers, and the writer urges officials to require detailed studies and binding guarantees from any developer.
A letter published by The Fayette County Record challenges the financial case for a proposed data center near Winchester, arguing that tax revenue could decline as servers and other equipment lose value. The writer also warns that using anticipated data center taxes to support long-term La Grange Independent School District debt could shift costs to local property owners if the facility underperforms or closes.
The letter raises concerns about continuous cooling noise, backup generator testing, water consumption and chemical contamination, groundwater protection, and traffic on FM 448 and FM 153. It says the Fayette County Commissioners Court has passed a resolution opposing data centers and argues that officials should follow Stephens County's example by requiring comprehensive studies, independent engineering review, neighbor notification, and binding commitments from developers.
