Memphis City Council to revisit data center vote following recent protests
The Memphis City Council is scheduled to revisit and potentially vote on a proposed 12-month moratorium on new data centers following protests that disrupted an earlier meeting. Security restrictions have been increased after threats and concerning calls to council employees, while Shelby County leaders consider a separate temporary moratorium.
The Memphis City Council is preparing to reconsider a proposed 12-month pause on new data center development after an earlier meeting was suspended when protesters disrupted the chamber. Six people, including state Rep. Justin Pearson, were barred from returning after the Oct. 6 meeting, and council members subsequently postponed the vote.
The council plans to impose tighter security for the meeting, including limited attendance, clear-bag requirements, screenings and restrictions on bullhorns. Officials said the measures follow threats and concerning calls received by employees. Shelby County leaders are also debating a separate temporary moratorium on data centers.
