Hundreds show up to reject Delhi Township data center
Hundreds of Delhi Township residents opposed a proposed $10 billion data center during a special meeting. The township board voted 6-0 against data center development, while a previously enacted one-year moratorium prevents the project from being formally proposed until April 2027.
Hundreds of residents attended a special Delhi Township meeting to oppose a proposed $10 billion data center announced by Lighthouse Sustainability and the Lansing Economic Area Partnership, or LEAP. The crowd quickly filled the meeting room, and the township board voted unanimously to oppose any data center development in the township. Township officials also ended the township’s membership in LEAP after saying they were not informed about the proposal before its announcement.
Township Manager Tracy Miller said the board’s action reflected community input and concerns that local governments lack a regulatory framework for data centers. The township had already approved a one-year data center moratorium in April, meaning the project could not be formally proposed until April 2027. Lighthouse co-founder Gary Dorris criticized the opposition as premature, but said the company would not proceed if the community rejected the proposal.
