A proposed Carambola AI data center project in Bonner, Montana, has stalled after property owner Mike Barton withdrew his signature from the application. The proposed AI data center project by Carambola in Bonner, Montana, has stalled due to the withdrawal of a critical signature from the application. Property owner Mike Barton retracted his signature in March, which, according to the Missoula County Planning, Development Department, means the application cannot proceed at the Bonner Mill site. Carambola had intended to transform the location into an AI data center, emphasizing a sustainable environmental approach.

According to a statement from the Missoula County Voice, cited by a commissioner, Barton's decision was influenced by public concerns. While Carambola expressed gratitude for public input, the company plans to continue pursuing development at the mill site, suggesting they may seek a different agreement for the current location or an alternative site.

Karen Hughes of the Missoula County Planning, Development Department confirmed that the lack of the property owner's agreement effectively halts the current application but does not prevent Carambola from seeking other potential locations for their project.

Looking ahead, the Missoula County commissioners are scheduled to convene a work session on Thursday to deliberate on the broader policy regarding where data centers should be permitted within the county.
