Emotions run high at Morgan Valley town hall
The grassroots group Save Morgan Valley held a town hall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to oppose Alliant Energy's proposed gas-fired power plant. Residents voiced concerns over environmental, health, and water impacts, and questioned if the plant is intended for new data center construction in the area. The group is encouraging public engagement with local governments and the Iowa Utilities Commission to challenge the project.
The Save Morgan Valley grassroots organization recently hosted a town hall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to rally opposition against Alliant Energy's proposed 720-megawatt Morgan Valley Energy Center. The gas-fired power plant, slated for 160 acres of prime farmland near Highway 30 and the Linn-Benton Road, has sparked significant environmental, health, and economic concerns among local residents.
Speakers at the August 4th town hall, including raptor rehabilitator Sonja Hadenfeldt and sixth-generation farmer Jessica Petersen, highlighted potential impacts such as increased air pollution, water usage, and the loss of agricultural land. Hadenfeldt, who lives 1.5 miles from the proposed site in Benton County, expressed emotional concerns for both human health and wildlife. Petersen noted that neighboring Atkins and Benton County residents feel excluded from the discussion despite being heavily affected.
Critics also raised questions about whether the plant is being built to serve the energy demands of new data center construction in Cedar Rapids, a link Alliant Energy representatives deny, stating their energy generation is not for specific customers. The American Lung Association has already given Linn County failing grades for air quality. Save Morgan Valley is encouraging residents to attend meetings of the Linn County Board of Supervisors and Planning & Zoning, as well as the Cedar Rapids City Council, and to formally submit opposition to the Iowa Utilities Commission under docket number GCU-2026-0002.
