Van Buren Township residents raise more concerns about data center
Van Buren Township residents are raising concerns about noise, dust and construction impacts from a proposed data center ahead of a Planning Commission vote. ITC said it is working with the township to comply with noise and construction-hour ordinances, while Supervisor Kevin McNamara said officials have considered residents' concerns and environmental protections.
Residents near the proposed data center in Van Buren Township, Michigan, told WXYZ-TV Detroit that weeks of construction have brought persistent noise, truck dust and disruption to their homes. Some neighbors said their concerns were overlooked during the planning process and opposed placing the facility near residential areas.
ITC, the company identified as being behind the construction, said it is coordinating with Van Buren Township and complying with local noise and construction-hour requirements. Township Supervisor Kevin McNamara said officials listened to residents and considered measures involving water protection, wildlife corridors, sound suppression and landscaping, arguing that an outright ban on data centers would not have been legally defensible. The project was approaching its final planning stage ahead of a key Planning Commission vote, with residents continuing to press their objections.
