Socorro County commissioners in New Mexico unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on data centers. This decision follows months of community opposition to the proposed Green Data Center project, which New Mexico Tech had already decided not to pursue.
Socorro County commissioners in New Mexico have unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on data center development within the county. The decision by the commissioners came after several months of strong community opposition to the proposed Green Data Center project. Residents had voiced significant concerns at numerous town hall meetings regarding the potential impact of the data center on local resources.
New Mexico Tech, which was involved in the project, recently announced it would no longer pursue its construction. Despite this, Jason Bak, representing Green Data Centers, expressed the company's commitment to engaging with the community and contributing to local welfare. Green Data's CEO informed commissioners of their support for the process and desire to remain involved.
