NV Energy plans to stop providing electricity to Liberty Utilities, serving South Lake Tahoe, by 2027. This decision is driven by growing power demands from data center developments in northern Nevada, causing fears of power loss among residents. Both NV Energy and Liberty Utilities reassure customers that service will continue, as Liberty seeks new power partnerships.

NV Energy, the primary electricity provider for northern Nevada, is facing increased demand due to a boom in data center developments, leading to concerns about power availability. The utility is set to end its contract with Liberty Utilities, which serves approximately 50,000 residents and businesses in South Lake Tahoe, California, by May 2027.

This decision has sparked anxiety among South Lake Tahoe residents, amplified by social media commentary from journalists like Aaron Parnas, who highlighted the potential for power redirection to data centers. However, NV Energy stated that this transition has been planned since 2009, with the expectation that Liberty Utilities would eventually secure its own transmission access and energy supply. Liberty Utilities has also confirmed it is actively forming new partnerships to replace the supplemental power previously provided by NV Energy, assuring customers they will not lose service.

Michael Brown, former Executive Director of the Nevada Office of Economic Development, noted that infrastructure, particularly transmission lines, has not kept pace with the rapid growth in electricity demand from large data centers, some requiring 400-600 megawatts or more. He explained that utilities are not built for such rapid changes in demand, though NV Energy expects its upcoming Greenlink lines to significantly boost transmission capabilities, enabling it to serve both residential and business customers alongside data center needs.
