The City Of Lockport Has Suspended Data Center Discussions Pending Broader Regulatory Frameworks
The City of Lockport has suspended all discussions regarding future data center development proposals, citing a lack of consistent regional and national regulatory frameworks. This decision was made after a community workshop highlighted concerns about power, water, and environmental impacts. The city will pause decisions until clearer state and federal guidelines are established.
The Lockport City Council has indefinitely suspended all discussions regarding future data center development proposals following a community workshop held at the Star Innovation District. The workshop, which brought together utility representatives, regional planning experts, environmental stakeholders, and residents, revealed significant concerns.
City officials emphasized the absence of consistent standards and protections across communities, particularly regarding power, water, environmental impacts, and broader societal implications of the compute industry. Until clearer regulatory frameworks are established at state and federal levels, the City Council will maintain the suspension, and scheduled June workshop sessions have been canceled.
In addition to this pause, the City of Lockport announced that it will initiate a formal review and update process for the STAR Innovation District Master Plan in May 2027, coinciding with its five-year anniversary. This review is a standard planning practice aimed at ensuring the long-term plan remains aligned with evolving economic conditions, infrastructure considerations, community priorities, and regional development trends. The city anticipates engaging residents, stakeholders, and planning professionals in this upcoming review process.
