Data center developments in Texas are causing a political rift, with some conservative voters expressing disillusionment with the Republican Party due to its stance on the industry. Residents like Cheryl Shadden of Hood County have been protesting a local crypto mining data center for over two years, even appearing in an ad for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa.
Hinojosa is challenging Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, and the debate over data centers is central to the campaign, as well as the U.S. Senate race. While Abbott initially promoted Texas as a data center hub, he recently stated he has "pressed pause on any new data center approval" and established "guidelines and guardrails." Democrats, including Hinojosa, are advocating for an immediate moratorium and an end to tax incentives for developers.
Even the state Republican party is now calling for tighter regulations, making it a priority during their convention. Robert Paterson, a land use specialist at UT Austin, notes that opposition is stronger in rural counties due to the disruptive nature of large-scale projects. Some conservative voters, like Mary Jo Bloomquist, are so disheartened that they plan to abstain from voting, potentially impacting Republican candidates in a closely contested election year.
