U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson traveled to Sioux City, Iowa, for a fundraiser breakfast in support of 4th District Congressional candidate Chris McGowan. During an exclusive interview, Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, shared his confidence in Republicans holding and expanding their majority in the upcoming midterm elections. He also addressed the stalled farm bill, attributing delays to political divisions and urging the Senate to pass the House-approved legislation.
Regarding data center development, Speaker Johnson asserted its critical role in the United States' competitiveness in artificial intelligence against China. He stated that the "AI race is directly tied to our liberty, our security, our opportunity, prosperity" and that the U.S. "cannot lose this race to China." Johnson also controversially claimed that China is actively working to foster community opposition to data center development through misinformation campaigns.
Chris McGowan, who previously served as president of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce for 15 years, highlighted his background in agriculture and capital investment as qualifications for his potential work in Washington. He stressed that Iowa's 4th District is primarily an agricultural district, aiming to convey its role in "feeding and fueling the world." McGowan is set to face Democrat Dave Dawson in the November election.
