Uptown Charlotte data center project includes demolishing historic building front
A historic building, the Court Arcade, in Uptown Charlotte faces demolition to make way for a 4-story data center project by Digital Realty. A group of architects is actively fighting to preserve the building, or at least its facade, citing its cultural significance. Digital Realty has submitted a demolition permit despite earlier commitments to preservation.
A historic building known as the Court Arcade in Uptown Charlotte, standing for over a century, is slated for demolition to make way for a new data center. Local architects and preservationists are fighting to save at least part of the structure, which they describe as a symbol of architectural evolution and a vital part of the city's cultural fabric.
Digital Realty intends to construct a four-story data center on the property, adjacent to an existing facility. While the Historic Landmarks Department initially committed to preserving the front of the Court Arcade, county records indicate that Digital Realty recently submitted a permit to demolish the entire building.
Local architect Victor Jones expressed his belief that the building, once a hub for attorneys' offices and retail, should be saved in its entirety or at least its facade. He called for city leaders to intervene, acknowledging that preservation would require more time and money. Digital Realty, however, claims the building is not listed on the historic register and has pledged to engage further with the American Institute of Architects to understand their concerns.
