Monroe Township Council has unanimously passed an ordinance that prohibits data centers within Williamstown, New Jersey. This decision, made on April 22, follows extensive community pushback from residents who voiced concerns about the potential for loud noise, negative environmental impacts, and increased strain on the local electrical grid and water infrastructure. The ban specifically targets future data center developments, including a previously proposed AI facility within the 1.6 million-square-foot Hexa Redevelopment Plan on the Black Horse Pike. Mayor Greg Wolfe commended residents for their diligent participation in numerous council and planning board meetings since January, acknowledging the process took time but resulted in a comprehensive ban. Other towns in the region, such as Mantua and Mullica Hill, are also reportedly considering similar prohibitions. The council's action was met with support from residents like Fatima DaCosta, who praised the government's responsive and community-centered approach.
