Stafford supervisors debate scope of deeper financial analysis after “forensic audit” talk; special session set for Nov. 17
The Stafford County Board of Supervisors debated commissioning an independent financial analysis and scheduled a Nov. 17 session to refine its scope. The board also plans to discuss removing by-right data centers from M-2 zoning and excluding them from the county’s technology zone, but took no action on those proposals at the Oct. 27 meeting.
Stafford County supervisors debated whether to commission a broad, independent financial analysis covering county government, schools, constitutional officers, procurement, personnel, capital projects, grants and internal controls. Supervisors Crystal Vanuch and E. Darrell English advocated for the review, while County Administrator William H. Ashton II cautioned that the term “forensic audit” could imply unsupported allegations of misconduct. No request for proposals was authorized, and the review’s cost remains unknown.
The board scheduled a special meeting or work session for Nov. 17 to refine the analysis and separately consider proposals to remove by-right data centers from M-2 zoning and from the county’s technology zone. Those data-center matters were not decided at the Oct. 27 session and remain pending for future discussion. The debate comes amid controversy over county tax increases and the proposed scope of government oversight.
