The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board is implementing new power rates specifically for data centers, effective October 1. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board has approved new power rates tailored for data centers, which are scheduled to become effective on October 1. The TVA stated that the existing rate structure did not adequately account for the operational requirements and risks associated with serving these high-demand facilities. These adjustments are intended to foster the expansion of private data center development and support the future of artificial intelligence within the region.

According to Tom Rice, TVA Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, the revised data center rates align with the federal administration's Ratepayer Protection Pledge, signed in July. This pledge aims to prevent a surge in electricity demand from AI data centers from translating into higher utility bills for American households and businesses. The TVA consulted with local power companies, and the new billing rate for data centers will reportedly be about 10% higher than current charges.

Despite the TVA's assurances, concerns have arisen regarding the accountability of companies under the new rate structure. The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy has publicly called for greater transparency around the new rates to ensure that data centers contribute their fair share to infrastructure costs. TVA leaders maintain that these changes are necessary given the rapid growth of data centers across the valley.
